Get ready for tax season: Free help is available

January 14, 2017

Tax season is nearly here! It’s important to remember that information about your health coverage is now a part of the tax filing process. The IRS needs to know who had health coverage in 2016.

That's where Form 1095-B for health coverage comes in. It lets the IRS know who had coverage and for how long. You may get a Form 1095-B in the mail from the California Department of Health Care Services. Keep it, because you may need it when you complete your tax return.

If you have questions about Form 1095-B and how to answer whether you have minimal essential coverage (MEC) for health care, the CA Department of Health Care Services has posted FAQs to help you.

If your income is less than $54,000, you may be able to get help preparing your taxes for FREE. Contact the organizations below for more information:

2-1-1 Santa Clara County:
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offers free tax assistance to those who meet income guidelines. IRS-certified volunteers sponsored by local nonprofit organizations here in Santa Clara County can help you prepare your tax returns.

Assistance is available in several different languages.
