Summer Meals and Snacks for Kids

School is out for the summer! There are lots of places to get free meals and snacks when school is not in session.

Free summer meal programs in Santa Clara County are available to anyone under 18 years old. Children do not need to be enrolled in on-site programs in order to receive free meals at most locations.

New Medicare Cards Coming Soon

Medicare will be mailing new Medicare cards between April 2018 and April 2019. The new Medicare card has a new Medicare number. This number is unique to you. Medicare is removing Social Security Numbers from Medicare cards. This change will help protect your identity.

You don’t need to do anything to get a new card. But make sure Social Security Administration has your correct mailing address. You can visit www.ssa.gov/myaccount or call 1-800-772-1213 if updates are needed. TTY users should call 1-800-325-0778.

Time to get vaccinated!

Kids need more than backpacks and supplies to be ready for school this fall. Some vaccinations are required before they start. The best way to protect your children from disease is to make sure they stay up-to-date with their shots. Young children, preteens, and teens all need vaccines.

Now is the time to check with your child’s doctor about back to school vaccinations!

Protect yourself from illness, including hepatitis A

The spread of illnesses like flu, stomach flu, and many others can be stopped with proper handwashing. Recently, there is an increase of hepatitis A in our county among people who are homeless, use drugs, or have recently been in jail. Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. The virus can spread when food and drink are prepared without washing hands first, and from intimate contact. Hepatitis A can be a mild illness lasting a few weeks or a serious illness lasting many months.
