Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal, launched in 1966, is the primary safety-net public insurance program in California. The Medi-Cal managed care program is free for children from birth to age 19, parents and pregnant women.

Parents, pregnant women and children may be eligible if they are

  • a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant
  • a California resident
  • aged, blind, or otherwise disabled
  • a member of a family whose annual income falls within the prescribed guideline, which currently is between 100% and 200% of the Federal Poverty Level; for children, the guideline is a sliding scale dependent on the size of the family and the age of the child.

For instance, income guidelines for a child in a family of four are as follows:

    Child's Age Family's Monthly Income
Birth to 1 year Up to $3,442
    1 to 6 years Up to $2,289
    6 to 19 years Up to $1,721
